Are Jazzman’s Blues Based On Real Events?

“A Jazzman’s Blues” is not based upon true events. Although it is a new story, Tyler Perry, the writer and director of the film, created it. 

However, Perry draws heavily from his personal experiences and the real problems faced by blacks during Jim Crow. This was Perry’s first script. Perry was a young writer-director who lived in Atlanta in 1995. He used to sneak into Alliance Theatre. After watching August Wilson’s performance, Perry approached the actor at a cafe. 

He was encouraging, and I told him about the plays I had written. “Jazzman” poured from me when I returned home,” he stated. Perry was not interested in the script, but it did garner some interest. Perry thought, “I will do this one day. But now, I need to prove that I am a box-office draw.”

His first script, “A Jazzman’s Blues”, was largely inspired by his personal experiences. The story included jazz, as Perry had made it so. It was a reflection on my life, and I believe subconsciously that a lot of my life came out while writing. 

There was music in times of sadness. But there was music in moments of joy and laughter. My grandfather owned the S Club juke joint. I can recall seeing rural Louisiana people having fun. “So I took on all of these experiences,” he stated. It was a place where you could let go and allow the music to take control of your body. Perry stated that it was important for me to give the characters a safe space.

Leanne, who is white, passes as white to get a better life for herself. Perry discovered that this had also happened in his family. Perry looked into his family’s history and found a photo of his grandmother, whom he had never met. She looked just like a white woman. “She looked like a white woman.” He stated. Perry has been affected by the lightness and darkness of one’s skin since childhood.

“Wherever I grew up, the darker your skin was, the more successful you were. My father loved my older sister. He called her “Red” because she was so fair. He said he also thought his sister and I were treated badly because we both had brown skin. Perry’s story was based on everyone around him having experienced a similar situation.

It is hard to believe that the entire script of ‘A Jazzman’s Blue’ was written more than twenty years ago. Perry discovered that Perry’s story is still relevant today as it was when he wrote it. “I was so interested in what was happening in America politically and how certain groups of politicians are trying to destroy our history. 

They don’t want books banned, they don’t want to teach about slavery, and they don’t want people to talk about Black Americans’ hardships in America. “I thought that if the movie inspires someone to research and find out the truth, then it’s worth it,” he stated. All this being said, it’s clear that ‘A Jazzman’s Blues’, while fictional, is deeply rooted within the director’s life and experiences and a powerful reflection of current society.

A Jazzman’s Blues is a forbidden love story between star-crossed lovers set in the 1940s in the Deep South. The story spans 40 years and begins with their first meeting as teenagers.
