Viola Davis is the undisputed queen of cinema and her latest film, The Woman King, is set to come out on Friday, Sept 16, 2022. The historical drama is based on a true story and takes a look at an all-female unit of warriors in Africa during the 18th and 19th centuries and the general who trains them.
Davis plays General Nanisca and throughout the film, we see her train the next generation of the Agolie who protect the African Kingdom of Dahomey. She must prepare them to battle an enemy, the Europeans, that wants to destroy them and everything they stand for.
Beyond Viola Davis, the cast includes John Boyega, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Jimmy Odukoya, and Masali Baduza. The story was written by Dana Stevens and Maria Bello and the screenplay was written by Dana Stevens. The film is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood
Is The Woman King on Netflix?
Unfortunately, The Woman King will not be on Netflix when it comes out on Friday, Sept 16. It will be in theaters. Although, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Considering the level of action, it looks like this movie was made to be seen on a big screen. Seeing Viola Davis beat the crap of a European dude is going to be so much more powerful in a theater.
That being said, there are some movies and shows on Netflix that are similar to The Woman King including Amina, Jewel, Country Queen, and Beasts of No Nation.
When will The Woman King be on Netflix?
The Woman King will not be available to stream anywhere on the day it releases. It will only be available to watch in theaters so grab your popcorn and candy and head to your local one.
Since it’s a Sony movie, when it leaves theaters, it will eventually go to Netflix because Sony and Netflix have a deal allowing Netflix to stream their films. It usually takes about six months for Sony movies to come to Netflix after their theatrical premiere. That means the film should come to Netflix sometime in early 2023.
